Module Guide

Modular Structure

Our academic year is divided into two semesters.  The University operates a modular system, and you are expected to studyfour modules each term, giving a total of eight modules in a full year.  Modules may be mandatory, optional or elective:

Mandatory modules:  These modules are compulsory.

Optional modules:   Students are required to choose from a specified list of modules relevant to the subject area of their degree discipline.

*Elective modules (download a PDF containing the list of approved electives): Students are permitted to choose modules from outside of their degree discipline.  The School of Management and Languages has compiled a list of approved electives, which lists those modules that are popular elective choices for SML students.  However, you may also take any module listed in the catalogue as an elective provided you meet the pre-requisite requirements. For modules offered by the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, please download the following guidance sheet written by the Languages Elective Coordinator Elecinfo2009-10 (.doc).

Details of the mandatory modules, optional and elective choices for each degree can be found in your course structure document.  The choice of optional and elective modules made in earlier years is crucial in determining the subjects you can study in later years.

Module Availability

The School of Management and Languages runs as many modules as resources permit in any given academic year.  No guarantee can be given that all the modules listed in this catalogue will be running, this is dependent on staffing requirements and on student demand.  Entry to specialist third and fourth year classes is also restricted.

Registration for Modules

You must be registered for the modules that you are studying.  ALL students are now expected to register online. You can access the online enrolment facility at https://my.hw.ac.uk/hwreg0910/faces/Page1.jsp

If you receive a pass/proceed decision that allows you to progress at the July Exam Board you can enrol online from 3rd – 19th August 2009.

If you have resits, and are able to progress following the August resit examination board you may enrol online from 31st August – 4th September 2009.

Combined Studies students will enroll online from 7th – 11th September, having first met with your Director of Studies.

If you do not fall into any of the above categories, you should contact the School Undergraduate Office for further information.

Any subsequent changes to optional or elective choices must be agreed between yourself and your mentor, then recorded on a Change of Module form available from the School Office, Mary Burton Building, Room 1.23.  Modules may not be changed after Week 3 of the relevant semester.  The form must be returned to the School Office (MB 1.23) for processing.  Failure to notify the School of a change in module may lead to a delay of notification of your exam results to you.

Reading Lists

Some modules have published reading lists on the module web page. Where these are available, they will be listed at the bottom of the page in the Supporting Information, Links and Downloads. Heriot-Watt University's library will hold stocks for lending purposes. Please also note that our on-campus bookshop, run by Blackwell, is open during the summer months and can have your order ready for collection by prior arrangement with the manager, Alistair Millar. Contact Alistair directly at heriotwatt@blackwell.co.uk
