About the Centre for Economic Reform & Transformation

The Centre for Economic Reform & Transformation (CERT) was established in 1990 by Professor Paul Hare in response to radical economic and political changes taking place in Central and Eastern Europe. Since 1997, CERT researchers have continued to expand and develop this knowledge under the directorship of Professor Mark Schaffer.

Aims

The aims of the Centre are to increase academic understanding of the economic transition to a market economy from previously closed markets. CERT has expanded its research remit beyond the former socialist countries to include emerging economies throughout the world.

CERT has established an international network of academic contacts and promoted co-ordinated research programs over its 20 years, with projects including studies privatisation in Russia and other countries in Eastern Europe; labour market reform, competitiveness and industrial restructuring; enterprise reform; employment forecasting and other research topics.

Studying & research at CERT

CERT offers students and postgraduate research students a range of study opportunities to study transition economics. Students have access to the latest results from ongoing projects and can utilise the Centre’s collection of publications and data sources.

CERT maintains close links with the Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics (SGPE) and attracts high-calibre students, often those with a research scholarship or fellowship.
