Edinburgh Interpreting Research Summer School 2014

The Edinburgh Interpreting Research Summer School (EIRSS) was launched in 2013 and it was the first ever initiative of its kind. It is designed to offer intensive research training for existing and future scholars in any field of interpreting.

EIRSS is developed and hosted by the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies (LINCS) at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, which has been offering courses in Translation and Interpreting since 1970 and is one of only four UK university departments that have been granted membership of CIUTI, an international body which brings together universities which specialise in translating and interpreter training. LINCS has an “internationally excellent and world-leading” research track-record, as attested by the last UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008).

EIRSS 2014

Relevant to researchers interested in Conference Interpreting (CI) and Public Service Interpreting (PSI) alike, for both spoken and signed languages, EIRSS 2014 will focus on research design and methods, and it will include lectures on the state of the art in CI and PSI research, seminars and a round-table discussion. Suggested reading lists and other materials for personal study will be provided.

The five-day programme includes guest lectures from Professor Barbara Moser-Mercer and Professor Franz Pöchhacker, who are world-leading figures in interpreting research.

There will be seminars by Heriot-Watt academics, librarians and research managers on research design and methods, literature search and maximising impact.

Participants will also have the opportunity to network with world-renowned researchers in the field of Interpreting as well as the chance to showcase individual projects and receive feedback from the expert staff in LINCS.

Who should attend ?

EIRSS is open to existing and future scholars in any field of interpreting including those about to embark in a PhD, those in the first stages of doctoral study and those considering a change of direction in their professional career or academic trajectory.
