Dr Robbie Mochrie elected Executive Director of ASREC
Dr Robbie Mochrie has been elected Executive Director of the Association for the Study of Religion, Economics and Culture (ASREC). Dr Mochrie's work concentrates on the development of markets for religions in Scotland from the late eighteenth until the early twentieth century. He takes over as Executive Director after serving as ASREC's Conference Program Chair for the last three years.
Welcoming Dr Mochrie's appointment, ASREC President Professor Laurence Iannaccone said, "Robbie Mochrie has already played a very important role in ASREC's development. We are very pleased that he has agreed to remain closely involved with us over the next three years, which will be very important for the development of the field of economics and religion."
Dr Mochrie is currently on study leave, based at Chapman University's Institute for Religion, Economics and Society (IRES).
Prestigious UNESCO appointment for Dr Janusz Brzeszczynski
Dr Janusz Brzeszczynski, Senior Lecturer in Finance, has been appointed to the Global Scientific Committee of UNESCO's Planet Earth Institute (PEI).

Economics students Milos Bartosek and Tina Yordanova were recently awarded the Lord Smith of Kelvin Prize and Dr Irene Adams Prize for 2011 at a prize giving held to mark their achievement.
The future of electricity demand
Professor Tooraj Jamasb, SIRE Chair in Energy, is co-editor of a new book entitled The Future of Electricity Demand: Customers, Citizens and Loads. Written by a team of leading academics and industry experts, the book investigates the economics, technology, social aspects, and policies and regulations which are likely to characterize energy demand in a low-carbon world. It provides a comprehensive and analytical perspective on the future of electricity demand.
BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2011
For the fifth consecutive year, Heriot-Watt University has collaborated with BP p.l.c. in the preparation of the data for their Statistical Review of World Energy 2011. Researchers from Accountancy, Economics and Finance in the School, the Energy Academy as well as the Institute of Petroleum Engineering were involved. The BP Review is highly esteemed and consulted by energy experts, the energy industry, academics and journalists around the world. Heriot-Watt s involvement in the BP Review is part of our increased focus on energy issues ensuring we continue to be a major player in research in this field.

Professor John Sawkins appointed to Scottish Government Review Group
Professor John Sawkins has been invited to join the Reference Group of the newly established Review of the Expenses and Funding of Civil Litigation, chaired by Sheriff Principal James Taylor. This follows publication of the Scottish Government’s response to the 2009 Scottish Civil Courts Review chaired by Lord Gill . Sheriff Principal Taylor will make recommendations to Scottish Ministers towards the end of 2012.
Heriot-Watt to host major conference on monetary policy
Heriot-Watt will host a major conference on monetary policy this September. The conference, titled Monetary Policy before, during and after the crisis, is being organised by Scottish Institute for Research in Economics (SIRE); the Money, Macro & Finance Research Group (MMF) and Heriot-Watt University. It will bring together academics and central bank economists to review the issues around monetary policy before, during and after the crisis, and to produce a set of papers which will be a key reference on the topic for future researchers.
Professor Mark Schaffer invited to give seminar at World Bank
Professor Mark Schaffer was invited to give a seminar at the World Bank as part of their South Asia Region (SAR) Chief Economist's seminar series. The seminar, entitled 'A Framework for Within - and Between - Country Comparisons of Business Environment Constraints on Firm Growth', was chaired by Ms Kalpana Kochhar, the SAR Chief Economist.
60 years of the BP Statistical Review of World Energy
The BP Statistical Review of World Energy, the longest running compilation of global energy statistics available, is now 60 years old.
