Our academic year is divided into two semesters. The University operates a modular system, and you are expected to study four courses each term, giving a total of eight courses in a full year. Courses may be mandatory, optional or elective:
Mandatory courses: These courses are compulsory.
Optional courses: Students are required to choose from a specified list of courses relevant to the subject area of their degree discipline.
Elective courses: Please visit the Recommended Electives information page for a list of courses. Students are permitted to choose courses from outside of their degree discipline. The School of Management and Languages has compiled a list of approved electives, which lists those courses that are popular elective choices for SML students. However, you may also take any course listed in the catalogue as an elective provided you meet the pre-requisite requirements.
Details of the mandatory courses, optional and elective choices for each degree can be found in your programme structure document. The choice of optional and elective courses made in earlier years is crucial in determining the subjects you can study in later years.
The School of Management and Languages runs as many courses as resources permit in any given academic year. No guarantee can be given that all the courses listed in this catalogue will be running, this is dependent on staffing requirements and on student demand. Entry to specialist third and fourth year classes is also restricted.
You must be registered for the courses that you are studying. ALL students are now expected to register online. You can access the online enrolment facility from 16th August, please check http://www.hw.ac.uk/registry/enrolment.htm for further information about availability.
If you receive a pass/proceed decision that allows you to progress at the July Exam Board you can enrol online.
If you have resits, and are able to progress following the August resit examination board you may enrol online.
Combined Studies students will enroll online, having first met with your Director of Studies.
If you do not fall into any of the above categories, you should contact the School Undergraduate Office for further information.
Any subsequent changes to optional or elective choices must be agreed between yourself and your mentor, then recorded on a Change of Course form available from the School Office, Mary Burton Building, Room 1.23. Courses may not be changed after Week 3 of the relevant semester. The form must be returned to the School Office (MB 1.23) for processing. Failure to notify the School of a change in course may lead to a delay of notification of your exam results to you.
Some courses have published reading lists on the course web page. Where these are available, they will be listed at the bottom of the page in the Supporting Information, Links and Downloads. Heriot-Watt University's library will hold stocks for lending purposes. Please also note that our on-campus bookshop, run by Blackwell, is open during the summer months and can have your order ready for collection by prior arrangement with the manager, Alistair Millar.
