MSc Translation and Computer-Assisted Translation Tools

The Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies (LINCS) has a long history of producing graduates with skilled in Translating and Interpreting to help meet the need for professionally trained communications specialists.

The continuing globalisation of trade and its multilingual nature has created a real demand for translation and interpreting services. Our MSc programme offers training in key translation techniques such as revising, editing, summarising, and technical writing; and key interpreting skills such as consecutive, simultaneous, and liaison intepreting. In addition the programmes gives you detailed understanding of, and the skills to use, a range of computer-assisted translation tools.

The practical element of our MSc programme is supported by our state of the art language facilities including 5 digital interpreting labs, 2 PC labs, language resource lab, dictionaries room, and self-study facilities.

Language combinations

In the practical translating and interpreting courses students opt for one of two ‘strands’, corresponding to their chosen language combination:

Strand A

Study of English + one other language from French, German or Spanish. Students work in both directions between the two languages chosen.

Strand B

Study of English + two foreign languages from French, German, Spanish, Arabic or Chinese. Students on this strand work from the two chosen languages into English.
